Alma Mater, Nourishing Mother? Published in UNESCO's Higher Education and Society

I’m thrilled to share my first article from my PhD, 'Alma Mater, Nourishing Mother? Women’s Longing and Belonging in Public Universities in Brazil and England', published in UNESCO IESALC's 'Higher Education and Society' as part of the Thematic Dossier on gender and intersectionality at the university.

Reading the gendered metaphor 'alma mater' — ‘nourishing mother’ — my article explores a triangular interplay between mothers, daughters and the university, using my 'mothers-and-daughters' methodology to tackle long-standing inequalities.

Through a Brazil–UK comparison, I show how different contexts illuminate each other, inviting dialogue across geopolitical settings in a time of polarised higher education and contested widening access policies that mirror broader societal divisions and borderings.
